A town in northwestern Finnmark, northern Norway. One of the northernmost towns in the world, it is located about 100 km southwest of Nordkapp (Cape), the northernmost point of Norway, on the west coast of Kvalei Island. It gained autonomy in 1789. It was destroyed by the British Navy in 1809, by fire in 1891, and by German forces in 1944, but was rebuilt each time and became one of the commercial centers in western Finnmark. Due to the influence of warm currents, it rarely drops below freezing even in January, and it is known for having an ice-free port. The sun is invisible from late November to late January, and there are white nights from mid-May to late July. Fish meat and fish oil are processed, ships are repaired, and cod liver oil is exported. Population 6934 (1990 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
