Prince Shiki

Japanese:
Prince Shiki

A poet of the Manyoshu. He was active during the Fujiwara-kyo period. He was the son of Emperor Tenchi. His mother was Michinokimi Iratsume. He was the father of Emperor Kōnin, and was posthumously known as Emperor Kasuganomiya and Emperor Tawara. He was also the father of the Manyo poet Yuhara no Okimi. He was apparently already of age during the reign of Emperor Tenmu. He was not well-liked during the reign of Emperor Jitō. Although his works are few, consisting of only six tanka poems, they are clear, have a flowing rhythm, and are fresh, and also show delicate aspects. He also has poems that seem to include allegory, and some witty poems. Volume 2 includes the elegy of Kasanokanamura, who mourns the death of a prince. This article states that he died in 715 (Reiki 1), while the Shoku Nihongi states that he died in 716.
