This suspension bridge connects Brooklyn and Staten Island in New York on the east coast of the United States, and spans The Narrows (a strait connecting Upper and Lower New York Bays). It opened in November 1964, and its central span of 1,298 meters was the longest in the world for 17 years until the Humber Bridge was built. The idea of building a bridge or tunnel over this bridge had existed since the 1920s, but in 1948 the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority drew up a plan to build one, and construction began in 1959 to improve traffic conditions around New York.

アメリカ合衆国の東海岸，ニューヨークのブルックリンとスタテン島を結び，ザ･ナローズThe Narrows(上ニューヨーク湾と下ニューヨーク湾をつなぐ海峡)の上にかかるつり橋。1964年11月開通し，中央支間長1298mはその後，ハンバー橋が登場するまで17年間世界最長を誇った。ここに橋かトンネルをという考えは1920年代からあったが，48年トライボロ橋梁（きようりよう）トンネル公社が架橋計画を立案し，その後ニューヨーク周辺の交通事情を改善するために59年着工の運びとなった。
