Native to Malaysia, it is an evergreen climbing plant of the Piperaceae family, cultivated in India and Africa, with woody stems (illustration). Its English names are betel piper, betel vine, betel, sirih. The habit of covering betel nuts with lime, wrapping them in betel leaves and chewing them like chewing gum (betel chewing) is seen mainly in Malaysia, and the leaves and fruits are also used for medicinal purposes.
