Lake Motosu

Japanese: 本栖湖 - もとすこ
Lake Motosu

It is one of the Fuji Five Lakes, located on the border between Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru County, Yamanashi Prefecture, and Minobu Town, Minamikoma County. It is the westernmost of the five lakes. It is 900 meters above sea level and has an area of 4.7 square kilometers. It is the deepest of the five lakes at a maximum depth of 121.6 meters. It has a transparency of 11.2 meters and a clear indigo blue color. Lava from the eruption of Mount Fuji in 864 (Jogan 6) separated the "Motosu Suikai" into the current Lake Motosu, Lake Sai, and Lake Shoji. Although it is an oligotrophic lake, you can fish for crucian carp, yamame trout, and ugui. The number of tourists coming via the Fujinomiya Road (National Route 139) has also increased, but there are only a few facilities on the lakeside, such as a youth sports center, and it is not as lively as Lake Yamanaka or Lake Kawaguchi, and much of the natural environment remains. In 2013, the Fuji Five Lakes, including Lake Motosu, were registered on the World Cultural Heritage list as "Mount Fuji - a place of worship and a source of artistic inspiration", along with the constituent assets such as the Mount Fuji region, surrounding shrines, and Oshino Hakkai.
