American poet, journalist, and politician. Born in a rural area of Indiana, he graduated from Brown University and served as secretary to President Lincoln during the Civil War. He then worked at American embassies in Paris, Vienna, and Madrid, before returning to the United States and serving as an editorial writer for the New York Tribune (1870-74) and Assistant Secretary of State in 1878. He wrote many poems, novels, and histories (including a biography of Lincoln) in the 1970s and 1980s. He was appointed ambassador to Great Britain (1897-98) by President McKinley, and deepened friendly relations with Britain during the Spanish-American War. He became Secretary of State (1898-1905), and issued the Open Door Act regarding China (1899, 1900), as well as the Hay-Ponsfort Treaty (1901), paving the way for the construction of the Panama Canal.
