A large annual plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). It grows to a height of up to 1 meter. The stem is erect, thick, coarsely branched, reddish, with raised nodes, dark purple spots on the stem surface, and glabrous. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate, sharply pointed, 9-20 cm long, with many prominent lateral veins and short bristles on the veins and margins. The leaf sheaths have raised veins, are membranous, and glabrous. From summer to autumn, the plant produces cylindrical, slightly drooping flower spikes at the ends of the branches, and many densely packed flowers. The flowers are 2.5 mm long, greenish-white or reddish, with four perianths and clearly veined. There are six stamens, a small, slightly globular ovary, and two styles. The achene is covered by persistent perianth, is flat and round, about 2 mm long, black-brown and shiny. It is widely distributed in the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan it is a weed commonly found in fields and waterside areas.

タデ科（APG分類：タデ科）の一年草。高さ1メートルにもなる大形種。茎は直立して太く、粗大に分枝し、帯紅色で節は隆起し、茎面に暗紫色の細点があり無毛。葉は互生し、披針(ひしん)形で先は鋭くとがり、長さ9～20センチメートル。多数の顕著な支脈があり、脈と縁(へり)に短い剛毛がある。葉鞘(ようしょう)には隆起する脈があり、膜質で無毛。夏から秋に、分枝の先に円柱形で先がやや下垂する花穂をつけ、多数の花を密生する。花は長さ2.5ミリメートル、帯緑白色または帯紅色、花被(かひ)は4枚、脈が明らかである。雄しべは6本、子房は細小でやや球形、2本の花柱がある。痩果(そうか)は宿存する花被に包まれ、長さ約2ミリメートルの平たい円形、黒褐色で光沢がある。北半球の温帯から暖帯に広く分布し、日本では田畑や水辺に普通にみられる雑草である。
