A red brick used in civil engineering and architecture. It is made by mixing impure clay containing iron, river sand, etc., pressing it into a shape, and then firing it at around 1100°C. The red color comes from the iron oxide it contains. In Japan, it was used for architectural structures from the beginning of the Meiji period until the Taisho period. However, due to its poor earthquake resistance, with the spread of reinforced concrete, it has not been used much since the Great Kanto Earthquake except as decorative material, partitions, and walls. It is defined as an ordinary brick in the Japanese Industrial Standards, with dimensions of 210mm in length, 100mm in width, and 60mm in thickness.
