Tinea pedis

Athlete's foot. A skin disease of the soles of the feet caused by infection with a type of fungus called tinea fungus. It infests the base of the toes, between the toes, the soles of the feet, and the arches of the feet, causing small blisters. It can also cause white softening, sores, and thin peeling of the epidermis. In rare cases, it can infest the palms and bases of the fingers, but in most cases it is a trichophytid rash that develops secondary to lesions on the feet, and tinea fungus cannot be identified in these areas. Tinea fungus can infest any part of human skin, not just the soles of the feet, and the name of the disease varies depending on the part of the skin that is infested. If it infests the hair of the head, it is called "white spider" (tinea capitis), if it occurs on the inner thighs or buttocks, it is called "jock itch" (tinea cruris), if it occurs on the nails, it is called "nail athlete's foot" (tinea unguium), and if it infests the face, upper limbs, chest, abdomen, or back, it is called "tinea cruris" (tinea vesicularis variegata).

水虫のこと。白癬菌というカビの一種の感染によって起る足底部の皮膚病。足指の付け根や指の間，足の裏，土踏まずなどに寄生して，小さな水疱をつくる。あるいは白くふやけたり，ただれたり，表皮が薄くむけたりする。まれには手のひらや指の付け根に寄生すこともあるが，多くは足にできた病変から二次的に発生する白癬疹 trichophytidであり，この部分から白癬菌は証明できない。白癬菌は足の裏に限らず人間の皮膚のあらゆる部分に寄生し，寄生部位によって病名が違ってくる。頭髪に寄生した場合は「しらくも」 (頭部白癬) ，内股や臀部にできるのが「いんきんたむし」 (頑癬) ，爪に寄生する「爪水虫」 (爪白癬) ，顔や上肢，胸，腹，背中に寄生した場合は「ぜにたむし」 (小水疱性斑状白癬) になる
