Predation by animals of the same species. Broadly speaking, there are two types: one is eating a member that has died for some reason, and the other is actively killing and eating a living member. 動物が同種の個体を捕食すること。大別すると２種類あり，一つは何らかの理由で死んだ仲間を食べるものであり，もう一つは積極的に生きた仲間を殺して食べるもので，前者はごく普通に見られるが，後者は比較的まれである。カマキリなどの昆虫では交尾後に雄が食べられることは珍しくない。一般に個体密度が過大になった場合，弱小個体が捕食されることはしばしばで，アリ，グッピー，コロニーで繁殖する海鳥，ネズミなどに例が多い。近年，群れの乗っとりに際しての子殺しの例が多くの動物で報告されているが，これも広い意味での共食い。
