A port city in the state of Java Timur, eastern Java, Indonesia. It is located about 20 km northwest of Surabaya, overlooking Madura Island across the Strait of Alas. It once prospered as the gateway to the Majapahit Kingdom. It is famous for being the site of the tomb of Malik Ibrahim, the first Muslim missionary in Java. Fishing is a thriving industry. There is a cement factory, and it is developing as an industrial city with petrochemicals, steel, and other industries. Population 63,173 (1980).
