He lived a decadent lifestyle and developed tuberculosis, but he aspired to become a writer. In 1924, he entered Tokyo University, and the following year, he founded the magazine "Aozora" with Nakatani and Tonomura. He published masterpieces that would later become Kajii's masterpieces, such as "Lemon" and "In a Town with a Castle" (both 1925), but they did not attract attention from the literary world.
