Gniezno (English spelling)

Japanese: グニェズノ(英語表記)Gniezno
Gniezno (English spelling)
A commercial city in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship in western Poland. It is located on a plateau surrounded by many lakes and marshes, about 50 km northeast of Poznan. It is said to be the birthplace of the legendary Polish hero Lech, and was the capital of the Piast dynasty from the 10th century until the capital was moved to Krakow in the 14th century. A Catholic archbishopric was established in 1000, and the coronation ceremonies of successive kings were held here until around 1300. It then declined due to the invasion of the Teutonic Knights, wars with Sweden, and the plague epidemic in the 17th century. From 1793 to 1918 it was under Prussian rule. In modern times it has been a commercial center along the Poznan-Torun railway line, where cement, bricks, furniture, and other products are manufactured, and there are also factories for leather, food processing, and lumber. There are many buildings and ruins that remind us of the city's heyday, such as the Gothic cathedral. Population 72,900 (2002).
