...An American officer working at the base of the Allied Ground Forces of Southeastern Europe (headquarters of the Southeastern European Ground Forces in Izmir) was kidnapped. The Demirel administration was unable to handle the situation, so on March 12, 1971, the military sent an ultimatum to President Cevdet Sunay (a former military officer) demanding Demirel's resignation (a "coup by letter") and had Nihat Erim (a former professor at Istanbul University) form a government. Nevertheless, the political situation in Turkey was unstable throughout the 1970s, with the government changing 13 times in 10 years. During this time, Demirel's Justice Party and the Republican People's Party led by the young leader Ecevit (former journalist), who replaced İnönü, remained in a state of strife, and the Nationalist Action Party and the National Salvation Party (the successor to the National Order Party)...
