A mushroom of the Basidiomycete family, Gastromycetes, family Phallaceae (illustration). At first it is enclosed in a soft white shell, and its size and shape are similar to a lizard's egg. The mushroom that breaks through the shell is cylindrical with a sharp, horn-like tip, and its texture is porous but fragile, similar to a sponge. The lower half is white and the upper half is reddish. The top is deep red, and is covered with a black-brown mucus that gives off a strong, foul smell. This is a collection of spores, which are spread by flies attracted by the smell. It grows from summer to autumn on the ground in areas rich in organic matter, such as fields, forests, and gardens.

担子菌類腹菌目スッポンタケ科のキノコ（イラスト）。はじめは白い柔らかい殻に包まれ，大きさ形ともトカゲの卵に似る。殻を破って伸び出るキノコは先が角状にとがった円柱状，質はスポンジに似て多孔質だがもろい。下半部は白く上半部は赤みをおびる。上端は濃い赤色，その上に強い悪臭を放つ黒褐色の粘液でおおわれる。これは胞子の集りで，においにひかれたハエによって胞子は伝播される。夏～秋，畑，林，庭などの有機物に富んだ地上に生える。
