A city facing Mikawa Bay in the southern part of Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The Tokaido Main Line and Meitetsu Gamagori Line run along the bay coast. In the early modern period, Takeya Matsudaira's camp was located here, and the city prospered as a six-day city. It has been the center of Mikawa cotton production since ancient times, and even today the cotton textile industry is thriving. In recent years, precision machinery, chemicals, and transportation equipment industries have also developed. Gamagori Port is a commercial port where raw materials are imported and shipped, and tourist boats to Toba (Mie Prefecture) arrive and depart here. Miya in the east has developed as a coastal and deep-sea fishing base and the town of Mikawa Miya Onsen. The surrounding mountainous areas are known for their mandarin oranges. It belongs to Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park, where Oshima and Takeshima are located, and Nishiura Onsen springs spring up in the west. It has an area of 56.95 km2 . Population: 82,249 (2010). 愛知県南部,三河湾に面する市。1954年市制。湾岸に東海道本線,名鉄蒲郡線が通じる。近世竹谷松平氏の陣屋があり六斎市で栄えた。古来三河木綿生産の中心地であったが,今も綿織物工業が盛んで,近年は精密機器,化学,輸送用機器工業も発展している。蒲郡港は商港として原材料の輸・移入が行われ,鳥羽(三重県)への観光船が発着している。東部の三谷(みや)は沿岸・遠洋漁業基地と三河三谷温泉の町として発展している。周辺の山地はミカンの産地として知られる。三河湾国定公園に属し,大島,竹島が浮かび,西部に西浦温泉がわく。56.95km2。8万2249人(2010)。
