Consider a group of interacting particles. Various forces act on each particle from the surrounding particles at any given time, but if we average out the potential of these forces and consider the particle in question to be moving within this averaged potential (mean field) independently of the other particles, we can replace difficult multi-particle problems with single-particle problems. Once we solve this single-particle problem, we can calculate the mean field by assuming that all particles are moving according to their own solutions.
