… In Southeast Asia, the Jesuits, along with other denominations, formed a Catholic faction in the Philippines, which was under strong Spanish influence at the end of the 16th century. In Thailand, the French Jesuits, led by Father T. Valguarnera, assisted with the design and engineering of fortresses and other buildings, and gained the trust of King Narai. As a result, over a period of 20 years in the second half of the 17th century, they opened churches, schools, and hospitals in Bangkok, Ayutthaya, and Phitsanulok, engaged in missionary and medical activities, and also worked to romanize the Thai alphabet. …
