The capital of the 12th region in the southernmost part of Chile. Population 117,206 (1995). Located at latitude 53°10′ south, it is the southernmost city in the world along with Ushuaia in Argentina. It is an important port facing the Strait of Magellan and has been designated a free port. It is an export port for wool from Patagonian sheep farms and frozen mutton, and is also a base for oil extraction in the surrounding area. Founded in 1849, it was also settled by immigrants from Eastern Europe. Overland traffic from the capital passes through the Argentine side. [Hosono Akio]
