A city located on the Shimousa Plateau in the northwest of Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The city center was a post town on the early modern Kioroshi Kaido road. It produces pears and vegetables, and is also shifting to greenhouse horticulture and tourist farms. Machine, metal, and watch industries are active here. The Tobu Noda Line, Shin-Keisei Electric Railway, and Hokuso Railway intersect here, and the population has been rapidly increasing since 1960 as a residential area of Tokyo. 千葉県北西部,下総(しもうさ)台地上にある市。1971年市制。中心市街は近世の木下(きおろし)街道の宿場町。ナシ,野菜を産し,施設園芸や観光農園への切り替えも進められている。機械・金属・時計工業が行われる。東武野田線と新京成電鉄,北総鉄道が交差し,とくに1960年以降東京の住宅地として人口が急増している。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。21.08km2。10万7853人(2010)。
