A village in Kagoshima County, Kagoshima Prefecture. Population 776 (1995). The Tokara Islands, located between Kyushu and Amami Oshima, consist of the islands of Kuchinoshima, Nakanoshima, Gajiyajima, Heijima, Suwanosejima, Akusekijima, Kodakarajima, Takarajima, and Yokoatejima. Formerly known as the Lower Seven Islands, the islands formed the Jutou Village along with the Kami-mishima Islands (Iwojima, Kuroshima, and Takeshima, present-day Mishima Village) from the mid-Meiji Period until 1946, but in the same year the Lower Seven Islands were seized by the U.S. military and placed under the control of the Provisional Northern and Nansei Islands Government (later the Amami Islands Government).
