The Road to Wigan Pier

…He did not go to university, but became a policeman in Burma (1922-27), experienced the realities of the colony, and wandered around Paris and London, feeling guilty about his actions. He then worked as a teacher and a bookseller, while writing an autobiographical reportage, “Life in the Depths of Paris and London” (1933), and a novel, “Burmese Days” (1934), about the self-destruction of conscientious whites brought about by the colonial system. Around 1935, he became a socialist, and wrote a reportage on an unemployed mining area, “The Road to Wigan Pier” (1937), for the Left Book Club. In 1936, he participated in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side, and “Homage to Catalonia” (1938) is an outstanding essay that describes the battles and internal struggles that took place there with sharp observational skills and beautiful prose. …
