Japanese: メーワール（英語表記）Mewār

Name of a region in northwestern India, in the southeastern tip of Rajasthan state. Another name for the former princely state of Udaipur. Comprised of the Aravalli Mountains to the west and the alluvial plains that extend to their eastern foothills. Located in the watershed of the Banas River, part of the Ganges River system, and the Mahi River, which flows into the Gulf of Khambhat, the region is a strategically important transportation point connecting northern India with the coastal regions of the Arabian Sea. The region produces a large amount of corn, as well as wheat, cotton, and oil crops. Industries such as spinning and cement are also located here. The region was the base of the Sisodia clan, leader of the Rajput people, famous in Indian history for its courageous resistance to Muslim forces over a long period from the 12th to 17th centuries.

インド北西部，ラージャスターン州南東端部の地方名。旧ウダイプル藩王国の別称。西のアラバリ山脈とその東麓部に広がる沖積平坦面からなる。ガンガー(ガンジス)川水系のバナス川とカンバト(キャンベイ)湾に注ぐマーヒー川の分水域にあたり，北インドとアラビア海沿岸地方を結ぶ交通上，戦略上の要衝を占める。トウモロコシの産が多く，そのほか小麦，綿花，油料作物などを産する。紡績，セメントなどの工業も立地する。12～17世紀の長期にわたるムスリム諸勢力に対する勇猛な抵抗をもってインド史上名高い，ラージプート族の盟主シソーディヤ氏族の根拠地。
