Indian medicine, systematized as Ayurveda (science of life), mainly uses herbs to treat illnesses. The three major classical medical texts that discuss the Ayurvedic system as a whole are the Charaka Samhita of the Atreya school, which spread in northwest India, the Sushruta Samhita of the Dhanvantari school, which is based in Middle East India, and the Ashtāngahridaya Samhita (Compilation of the Eight Departments of Medicine), which compiled these two texts in the 7th century. Since then, it has developed by incorporating Tibetan medicine and yoga, and since the 17th century it has been strongly influenced by Western medicine. Today, Ayurvedic medical qualifications are recognized, and a research system has been established. The basic theory is the Tridosha theory, which states that illness is caused by an imbalance of the doshas, which mean defects or impurities, and that the basis of treatment is to restore the balance of the doshas and allow the major organs of the body to function normally.

アーユルベーダayurveda（〈生命の学問〉）として体系化されたインド医学は，おもに薬草を用いて病気の治療に取り組む。アーユルベーダの体系全体を論じる三大古典医学書は，北西インドで広まったアートレーヤ学派の《チャラカ・サンヒター》，中東インドに根拠を置くダンバンタリ学派の《スシュルタ・サンヒター》，さらに７世紀に両書をまとめた《アシュターンガフリダヤ・サンヒター》（医学八科精髄集成）がある。これ以後，チベット医学やヨーガを取り入れて発展し，17世紀以降は西洋医学の影響を強く受けた。今日ではアーユルベーダによる医師資格が認められ，研究体制が整備されている。病気は，欠陥や汚れを意味する〈ドーシャ〉が平衡を崩すことにより生じるとされ，治療の根本はドーシャの平衡を取り戻し身体の主要組織を正常に機能させることにある，というトリドーシャ（ドーシャの３要素）説が基本理論である。
