Nogariyasu - Nogariyasu

Japanese:
Nogariyasu - Nogariyasu

A perennial grass of the grass family. The culm is tough and 0.6-1.5 meters tall. The leaf sheaths are hairy. From August to October, the culm produces a panicle with a whorl of branches at the top. The spikelet is 4-5 mm long and contains one floret. The awn is bent at the knee, emerges from near the base of the glume, and protrudes outside the spikelet. The tuft of hair at the base is short. It grows in grasslands in hilly and mountainous areas, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The basic species is widely distributed in Eurasia. It is named after the fact that it resembles the calligraphy and is commonly found in fields. It is also called Saitogaya because it is often found in Saito on Mt. Hiei.
