A Russian-born Lama (Tibetan Buddhist) monk. He was from the Horry Buryat tribe in Transbaikal, and is known in Tibet as Ngawang Dorje. He gained the trust of the 13th Dalai Lama, and suggested a strategy of approaching Russia in opposition to the British advance into Tibet, which led to the British invasion of Tibet (1904). After the collapse of the Qing Dynasty (1911), Mongolia and Tibet declared their independence, and in 1912, on behalf of the Dalai Lama, he preached pan-Lamaism and concluded the Tibet-Mongol Treaty with Mongolia. He was active in the Buryat region until the early 1920s, but was arrested in 1937 and died the following year. He is also known for his movement to Latinize the Mongolian script.
