Robert Aldrich

American film director. Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, into a distinguished family related by marriage to the Rockefeller family. He entered the film industry in 1941 and worked as assistant director under many directors, including Jean Renoir and Charles Chaplin. After writing and directing for television, he made his film directorial debut in 1953 with Big Leaguer. In 1955, he established his own production company, and continued to make films with an independent spirit, such as setting up his own film studio with the profits from the hit of The Dirty Dozen (1967), and was highly acclaimed in Europe. He is known for his masculine works full of violent scenes, such as Vera Cruz (1954), Kill Me With a Kiss (1955), Attack (1956), Emperor of the North Country (1973), and The Longest Yard (1974), but he is also known for his films such as What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, which depicts the feud between elderly sisters. She also broke new ground with women's films such as "What's Wrong with Me?" (1962), "A Bit of a Gap" (1968), which deals with female homosexuality, and "California Dolls" (1981), which is set in the world of women's professional wrestling.

アメリカの映画監督。ロードアイランド州クランストンで、ロックフェラー家と姻戚(いんせき)の名家に生まれる。1941年に映画界入りし、ジャン・ルノワールやチャールズ・チャップリンなど多くの監督の下で助監督を務めた。テレビの脚本と演出を経て、1953年、『ビッグ・リーガー』で映画監督デビュー。1955年には自身の製作会社を設立し、その後も『特攻大作戦』（1967）のヒットで得た収益により自ら撮影所を構えるなど、独立精神あふれる映画づくりを続け、ヨーロッパでの評価も高かった。『ヴェラクルス』（1954）、『キッスで殺せ』（1955）、『攻撃』（1956）、『北国の帝王』（1973）、『ロンゲスト・ヤード』（1974）などの暴力描写に満ちた男性的な作品で知られるが、他方で老姉妹の確執を描く『何がジェーンに起ったか？』（1962）や、女性同性愛を扱った『甘い抱擁』（1968）、女子プロレスの世界を舞台にした『カリフォルニア・ドールズ』（1981）といった女性映画でも未踏の境地を開いた。
