Italian author. He joined the military at a young age and participated in the War of Independence in 1866. He became editor-in-chief of the magazine "Italian Militarium" and, with the success of "Military Life" (1868), he switched to the path of writing, publishing a series of travelogues to various European countries in the 1870s. He then published "Les Amigos" (1883) and "Cuore" (1886). Although "Cuore" was problematic in that it uncritically promoted the dominant ideology of Italian society, which had only recently achieved independence and national unification, with its overly stereotypical distinction between good and evil, the strong and the weak, and its unselfish praise of the mother country and the military, it became popular around the world.

イタリアの作家。若くして軍人となり，1866年の独立戦争に加わる。《軍国イタリア》誌編集長となり，《軍隊生活》(1868)の成功を機に作家の道に転進，70年代にヨーロッパ各国への旅行記を次々と刊行した。次いで《友達》(1883)および《クオーレ》(1886)を刊行。善と悪，強者と弱者のあまりに類型的な書き分け，祖国と軍隊への手放しの賛美など，独立，国家統一を達成してまだ日の浅いイタリア社会の支配的なイデオロギーをなんの批判もなく打ち出すという問題点をはらみながら，《クオーレ》は世界中で人気を博した。
