Ogura Shrine

Japanese:
Ogura Shrine
Year of death: Kakitsu 3 (1443)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A member of the imperial family in the early Muromachi period. Son of Prince Tsuneatsu, son of Emperor Gokameyama. He became a monk and took the name Seisho, but his secular name is unknown. He is also known as Higuchinomiya. His father, Prince Tsuneatsu, is also known as Oguranomiya, but the name Seisho refers to him as an individual. The name Oguranomiya comes from the fact that he lived in Saga-Kokura, a suburb of Kyoto. When Emperor Gohanazono ascended to the throne in 1428, Seisho, whose hopes of succeeding to the throne were dashed, fled Saga and sought refuge with Kitabatake Mitsumasa in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). The Kitabatake clan raised an army and were ordered by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori to attack Toki Mochiyori, but Seisho was appeased and returned to Kyoto a few years later. In 1434, he became a monk and took the name Seisho. Around this time, Oguranomiya's son, Noritaka, was adopted by Shogun Yoshinori and entered Kanshuji Temple as a monk, but in 1443 (Kakitsu 3), remnants of the Southern Court attacked the Tsuchimikado Imperial Palace and attempted to seize the sacred treasures in the Kinketsu Incident, in which Noritaka was arrested as a sympathizer and was exiled to Oki Island during the Bun'an era (1444-1449), where he died. His father, Oguranomiya, also died in the same year as the Kinketsu Incident, making for a turbulent life for two generations of father and son as the descendants of the Southern Court. <References> "A History of the Northern and Southern Courts, Supplemented" (Collected Works of Murata Masashi, Volume 1)
