A fertilizer applied to supply phosphate to the soil. Phosphorus or phosphoric acid is a necessary nutrient for plants as a component of nucleic acids, phospholipids, sugar phosphates, ATP, etc., but since the phosphoric acid content in soil is not necessarily high, it must be applied as a fertilizer. Organic fertilizers that have been used for a long time, such as rice bran, bone meal, and guano, contain relatively large amounts of phosphoric acid and are also phosphate fertilizers. Generally, the phosphoric acid in bone meal has low solubility and low fertilizing effect, but J.F. von Liebig discovered that when sulfuric acid is added to it, it becomes a highly phosphate fertilizer, i.e., superphosphate.
