Mount Kabuto

Japanese: 甲山 - こうざん
Mount Kabuto
A district in the central eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, bordering the west of Fuchu City. Former name of town. Established as a town in 1898. In 1955, it merged with the villages of Mikawa, Higashi, and Utsudo. In October 2004, it merged with Sera Town and Seranishi Town to form Sera Town. The central settlement, Kabutoyama, was established as a temple town for Imakoyasan Ryugeji Temple, and flourished as a post town on the Onomichi-Miyoshi Highway (National Route 184) during the Edo period. The townscape continues with the central settlement of Hongo in the neighboring Sera district. The surrounding area is mainly engaged in rice farming, livestock farming, vegetable cultivation, forestry, wood slats, and hat manufacturing. Mikawa Dam (→Ashida River) in the center of the area is used for the water supply and irrigation of Fukuyama City. National Route 184 and Route 432 intersect at Kabutoyama.

Kabutoyama

This mountain is located in the southeastern part of the Rokko Mountains, in the north of Nishinomiya City, in the southeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture. It has an elevation of 309m. The name of the mountain comes from the helmet-shaped shape of pyroxene andesite that erupted into the granite and was left behind by erosion. Granite is present up to an elevation of about 200m, and pyroxene andesite above that. The surrounding area is a resort known for Kabutoyama Forest Park, Nigawa Picnic Center, and Kitayama Dam. Kanno-ji Temple, located midway up the mountain, is a famous temple associated with Kobo Daishi.
