A city in the Rostov Oblast in southwestern Russia. It is located on the coast of the Don River, about 10 km upstream from the mouth of the Don River, which flows into the Sea of Azov. The site of the ancient Greek colony Tanais, it had been part of Turkish territory since the 15th century, but in 1696 Peter I occupied it and founded the city in 1708. It was occupied by Turkey for a time thereafter, and finally became part of Russian territory in 1739, and developed as a port city. Although it has ceded port functions to Rostov-on-Don upstream, industries such as machinery (forging, pressing), shipbuilding, seafood processing, textiles (socks, sewing), and construction materials have developed. It is the terminus of a branch line of the main railway line that connects Rostov-on-Don with Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Population: 80,700 (1991 estimate).
