Siger de Brabant

A representative philosopher of medieval Aristotelianism, or Latin Averroesism, born around 1240 - 1281 or 1284. Born in the Marquisate of Brabant, Belgium, he studied philosophy at the University of Paris, and exerted great influence as a professor in the Faculty of Humanities. He became a central figure in the school that identified Aristotelian philosophy, as interpreted by Averroes (Ibn Rushd), with philosophy itself. His theories were declared heretical by the Bishop of Paris in 1270 and 1277, and he fled to the papacy in Orvieto, where he was reportedly stabbed to death by his mentally deranged secretary.

中世のアリストテレス主義者，いわゆるラテン･アベロエス主義の代表的哲学者。ベルギー，ブラバン侯爵領出身，パリ大学で哲学を学び，人文学部教授として大きな影響力をふるい，アベロエス(イブン･ルシュド)の解釈を経たアリストテレス哲学を哲学そのものと同一視する学派の中心人物となる。その学説は1270,77年にパリ司教による異端宣告を受け，オルビエトの教皇庁に逃れたが，そこで精神錯乱した彼の秘書に刺殺されたと伝えられる。
