A general term for insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, suborder Homoptera, family Pseudococcidae. Their bodies are white and covered with a powdery, soft waxy secretion, and many of them continue to walk even after the second instar larvae. The body length is 1.5 to 8 mm, but 3 mm is common. Generally, adult females are oval in shape, with short legs and antennae, and can walk, but in some cases the legs degenerate and disappear. When stimulated, the body secretes a red or orange fluid. Many of them are known as pests, such as the mulberry mealybug Pseudococcus comstocki , the cottonwood mealybug Phenacoccus perganderi , and the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri . In addition to chemicals, parasitic wasps, which are natural enemies, can be artificially bred and used to control them.
