Sericite - Sericite

Another name for fine white mica. Also called sericite. When it occurs as a clay mineral, it has a unique silky luster, and when rubbed, it makes your fingers feel smooth. High-quality stones are used as pottery stone. It also occurs as a major component of low-grade metamorphic crystalline schist, known as sericite schist. Because of its silky luster, its English name comes from the Greek word meaning "silk-like."

微細な白雲母(しろうんも)の別名。セリサイトともいう。粘土鉱物として産する場合独特な絹糸光沢があり、こすると指がすべすべしてくる。良質なものは陶石として用いられる。また、低変成度の結晶片岩、いわゆる絹雲母片岩の主要構成鉱物として産する。絹糸光沢をもつため、英名は絹状という意味のギリシア語に由来する。
