A state (land) in southern Austria. It borders Yugoslavia. Its area is 9,533 km2 and its population is 562,000 (1995). Its capital is Klagenfurt. It is a mountainous country, surrounded by the Hohe Tauern and Niederetauern mountains to the north, and the Carnische Alps and Karawanken mountains to the south, with 57% of its area above 1,000 m above sea level. It is in the basin of the upper Drau (Drava) River and its tributaries (Mell, Rieser, Gurk, and Geil), and there are hydroelectric power plants in various places.
