A marine fish of the order Perciformes, family Sphyrna. It is found in Japan, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea, excluding the Sea of ​​Okhotsk in Hokkaido and the Ryukyu Islands. It has a long and slender body, a protruding lower jaw, small eyes, and sharp teeth on both jaws. The beginning of the pelvic fin is located far forward of the beginning of the first dorsal fin. It has 87-94 lateral line scales. It lives in shallow coastal waters. It is active at night, and mainly preys on small fish. The spawning season is June-July. It grows to just over 20 centimeters in one year, and 30 centimeters in two years. It can reach a maximum length of about 40 centimeters. Its flesh is white and mild, and is tasty when dried, grilled with salt, or boiled. It is in season from autumn to winter.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目カマス科に属する海水魚。北海道のオホーツク海および南西諸島を除く日本、東シナ海、南シナ海に分布する。体は細長く、下あごが突出し、目は小さいが両あごの歯は鋭い。腹びれの始部は第1背びれ始部のはるか前方にある。側線鱗(そくせんりん)は87～94枚。沿岸の浅所に生息する。夜間に活発に活動して、おもに小魚などを捕食する。産卵期は6～7月。1年で20センチメートル余り、2年で30センチメートルたらずに成長する。最大で全長約40センチメートルになる。肉は白くて淡泊であり、干物、塩焼き、煮魚として風味がある。旬(しゅん)は秋季から冬季。
