Italian literary critic and novelist. Influenced by French naturalism and the aesthetics of De Sanctis, he published Studies in Modern Italian Literature (vol. 1, 1879, vol. 2, 1882) and advocated the theory of verismo. He also created works based on his own theories, such as the novel Giacinta (1879) and the collection of short stories Passionate Women (1893), set in his native Sicily. His masterpiece is the novel The Marquis of Roccaverdina (1901). However, these works fall far short of the grand literary world constructed by his fellow master G. Verga, and while they are more folkloric than poetic, they run the risk of remaining merely a document of local customs.
