1890‐1988 A political leader from the North-West Frontier Province of India (now part of Pakistan). After receiving his education in Aligarh, he joined the Islamic reform movement, but in 1919 he participated in the anti-Rawlatt Act movement and the Khilafat movement. He worked with the Congress Party throughout his life and maintained a close friendship with Gandhi, earning him the nickname "Gandhi of the Frontier." He was imprisoned for 14 years during this time. In 1929, he rallied his fellow Pashtuns and formed a powerful movement called Khudāi Khidmatgar (Servants of God).
