A collector and publisher of Icelandic folklore. Inspired by the collecting activities of the Brothers Grimm and others in Germany and Scandinavia, he and his friend M. Grimsson began collecting oral literature and compiled it into a pamphlet (Icelandic Folk Tales, 1852). Later, with the encouragement of the German K. Maurer, who had also collected tales in Iceland, and with the extensive cooperation of his compatriots who had become awakened to national consciousness under the influence of romanticism, he collected a huge number of legends and folk tales and protected them from disappearance (Icelandic Legends and Folk Tales, first edition in two volumes, 1862-64, new and expanded edition in six volumes, 1954-61).

アイスランドの民間伝承の収集･刊行者。グリム兄弟をはじめドイツ，北欧各地の収集活動に刺激されて，友人M.グリムスソンと口承文芸の採集を始めて小冊子にまとめた(《アイスランドの昔話》，1852)。その後，自身もアイスランドで採話を行ったドイツ人K.マウラーの激励と，ロマン主義の影響下に民族意識に覚醒した同胞の広範な協力によって，膨大な伝説と昔話を収集し，消滅から守った(《アイスランドの伝説と昔話》初版2巻，1862‐64，増補新版6巻，1954‐61)。
