… After the Civil War, Stanton and SB Anthony learned that the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution guaranteed suffrage to black men but not to women, and split with activists who prioritized the emancipation of black slaves over the emancipation of women. At first, they tried to realize women's suffrage by amending the state constitutions, but at Anthony's suggestion, they decided to seek an amendment to the federal constitution, and in 1869 they formed the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). On the other hand, L. Stone, who recognized that black rights should take priority, placed importance on the movement in each state, and in the fall of the same year, he founded the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA). …
