Parrotfish (Budai) - Parrotfish

Japanese: ブダイ(武鯛) - ブダイ

A general term for marine fish of the Scaridae family of the Perciformes, or one of these species. Fish of the Scaridae family are characterized by the fact that the teeth on both jaws are fused together, forming a beak like that of the stonefish. Because of the shape of this beak, parrot fish are called parrot fish in English. This family is divided into the Scarinae and Parrotfish subfamilies, but the degree of tooth fusion differs between the two. In the Scarinae, the teeth are slightly broken at the edges, but in the Parrotfish subfamilies, the teeth are completely fused and it is impossible to distinguish each individual tooth.

スズキ目ブダイ科Scaridaeの海産魚の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。ブダイ科の魚は両あごの歯が癒合し，イシダイなどと同様，くちばしを形成しているのが特徴である。このくちばしの形から英語ではブダイ類をparrot fish(オウムウオ)という。本科はブダイ亜科とアオブダイ亜科とに分けられるが，両者は歯の癒合の程度が多少異なる。ブダイ亜科では歯が縁のほうで多少切れているが，アオブダイ亜科では癒合が完全で一つ一つの歯を区別することはまったくできない。
