Tai-yi-jiao (English spelling)

Tai-yi-jiao (English spelling)
A Taoist sect founded by the Taoist priest Xiao Baozhen in Ji County, Henan Province, during the Tianjun period of the Jin Dynasty (1138-40). It is one of the new Taoist sects, along with the True Great Taoism and the Quanzhen Taoism. It was named Taiyi Sect because it used a technique called "Taiyi Sangen Fa Lu" to save the people. "Taiyi" means heavenly gods, "Sangen" means the three gods of the Upper Yuan Heavenly Official, the Middle Yuan Earthly Official, and the Lower Yuan Water Official, and "Fa Lu" means talismans. It focused on saving people from illness and disasters with talismans and prayers, and had a strong magical flavor, but on the other hand it respected the Middle Way and had precepts such as not drinking alcohol and not marrying, but it did not preach the health care methods (→Health Care Theory) such as Jin Dan Dao (→Jin Dan Dao), Shi Kai, or Doin and Fang Zhong (→Fang Zhong Jutsu), which were valued in previous Taoism. They built Taiyitang temples in various places, rapidly increasing the number of believers and gaining the protection of the Jin royal family. During the reign of the 4th patriarch, Xiao Fudao, the sect developed under the protection of the Yuan royal family, but after the 8th patriarch, the lineage died out and the sect seems to have disappeared.
