In 1980, it became a city designated by government ordinance, with the following wards established: Central, East, South, West, Asa-minami, Asakita, and Aki. In 1986, Itsukaichi Town was incorporated and Saeki Ward was established. In recent years, various projects for the 21st century have been underway, such as the construction of Seifu-shinto (a hilly city in the west of Hiroshima), which began in 1990, and the Hiroshima Port Renaissance 21 (an international port city), whose reclamation began in 1992. The hypocenter became the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and within the park are the Atomic Bomb Memorial Cenotaph and the Peace Memorial Museum, and nearby is the Atomic Bomb Dome (historic site). In 1996, the park was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are Hijiyama Park, Shukkeien Garden (a scenic spot), and the ruins of Hiroshima Castle (a historic site).
