The Norse language, which is the origin of the Nordic languages among the Germanic languages, underwent major changes between the 6th and 8th centuries, and the Nordic languages from this period of change until the time of the Reformation are collectively called Old Norse. Old Norse is divided into two parts, East Norse and West Norse, the former including Old Swedish and Old Danish, and the latter Old Icelandic and Old Norwegian. The differences between the languages were not very large, especially in the early period, and Old Norse was collectively referred to as "Danish" among the Nordic peoples.
