Many species of Zoysia grow wild in Japan, and some species are used for lawns along with Zoysia grass. Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. (Manila grass) is widely distributed in southern Kyushu and its surrounding islands, from Okinawa to Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. It is commonly called Korean Zoysia grass and is used for lawns and golf course greens. There are many varieties, and it forms a denser mat of lawn grass than Zoysia grass, but it is somewhat weak to the cold. Zoysia tenuifolia Willd. (mascarene grass, Korean velvet grass) is distributed in southern Kyushu, Okinawa, and Southeast Asia.
