… From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, brass cartridges appeared, which allowed small-caliber guns of 105 mm or less to prevent gas leakage without the need for plastic stoppers on the closure, and also made it possible to increase the bullet loading and firing rate by connecting the cartridge filled with powder to the tail of the bullet to make a complete cartridge. Another breakthrough was the use of cotton powder, invented by Paul Vieille of France in 1880, as a propellant. It had the advantage of not producing black smoke, and came to be called smokeless powder. …
