Giant black jay - Ookurogwai

A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). Native to the Yangtze River basin in China, it is called Chinese black log waifus and is also cultivated in marshes and shallow mud. The underground stems run horizontally through the mud, then shoot out above ground to form clumps, forming large colonies. The hollow stems are 40-70 cm tall, and the leaves degenerate into tubular sheaths that encase the stems. In early autumn, the flower stalks grow to about 50 cm, and at the end they produce pale green flower spikes that are almost the same thickness as the stems. In late autumn, the tips of the underground stems swell to a diameter of 2-4 cm. The outer skin is black-brown, while the inside is pure white. When boiled, it has a crispy texture and a unique sweetness. It is used in New Year's and Chinese cuisine, but it is rarely cultivated in Japan, and is imported in cans from China.

カヤツリグサ科（APG分類：カヤツリグサ科）の多年草。中国の揚子江(ようすこう)流域原産で、シナクログワイと称し、湿地や浅水の泥中で栽培もされる。泥中を横走する地下茎から地上に茎を出して株をつくり、大群落となる。茎は中空で高さ40～70センチメートル、葉は退化して筒状の鞘(さや)となって茎を包む。初秋に花茎が50センチメートルほど伸び、先端に茎とほぼ同じ太さの淡緑色の花穂がつく。晩秋に地下茎の先端が肥大して直径2～4センチメートルになる。外皮は黒褐色、内部は純白で、煮るとさくさくした歯ざわりで特有の甘味がある。正月料理や中国料理に用いるが、日本での栽培はまれで、中国から缶詰で輸入している。

　正月や祝儀の料理に使われるほくほくとした食感のクワイはオモダカ科の植物で本種とは異なる。
