A peasant revolt that occurred in Russia in 1670-71. The Cossacks (approximately 20,000 people) living in the Don River basin were given military supplies and grain in exchange for preventing foreign invasions of the southern frontier of the Muscovite state, and were in a semi-autonomous state. Their acts of plunder along the Black Sea and Caspian Sea coasts were tolerated, and fugitives from cities and rural areas were not repatriated from the Don. However, with the establishment of serfdom in the mid-17th century and the wars with Poland and Sweden (1654-67), the number of fugitives fleeing to the Don rapidly increased.
