A city in northwest Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the Kikuchi Plain in the downstream Kikuchi River and faces the Ariake Sea. Takase, Ikura, and Ohama, which make up the city, once flourished as a shipping port for Higo rice. The Kyushu Shinkansen and Kagoshima Main Line run through the city. There are food, rubber, and printing factories, and rice, vegetables, and mandarin oranges are grown in the surrounding area, and seaweed and clam farming is also thriving. Tamana Onsen (simple hot spring, radioactive spring, 47°C) and Ishinuki Nagino Yokoana Group (historic site) are located here. In October 2005, the towns of Tensui, Yokoshima, and Taimei in Tamana County were incorporated. The area is 152.60 km2 . Population: 69,541 (2010). 熊本県北西部の市。1954年市制。菊池川下流域の菊池平野一帯を占め,有明海に面する。市街をなす高瀬,伊倉,大浜はかつて肥後米の積出河港として栄えた。九州新幹線,鹿児島本線が通じる。食品,ゴム,印刷の工場があり,周辺では米作をはじめ野菜,ミカン栽培が行われ,ノリ・アサリ養殖も盛ん。玉名温泉(単純泉・放射能泉,47℃),石貫ナギノ横穴群(史跡)がある。2005年10月玉名郡天水町,横島町,岱明町を編入。152.60km2。6万9541人(2010)。
